Man United flop Memphis Depay set for surprise transfer after La Liga exit

Former Manchester United forward Memphis Depay is reportedly set to join Brazilian side Corinthians.
Depay joined United from PSV Eindhoven in 2015 when Louis van Gaal was manager at Old Trafford. The Dutch winger enjoyed a bright start with two goals and an assist in just his third game for the club against Club Brugge in a Champions League qualifier. But the Dutchman failed to fulfil his potential at United before being sold to Olympique Lyon in 2017. He has since enjoyed spells at Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in La Liga, leaving the latter this summer after a single season.
And now the 30-year-old looks set to complete a surprise move to Brazil. Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that Depay will join Corinthians, who currently sit 17th in Brazil's Serie A.
"Memphis Depay to Corinthians, here we go!" he said on X, formerly known as Twitter. "Deal done on contract valid until 2026.
"Dutch forward agreed on terms days ago but now also contracts are ready — as Depay completed medical tests today. Medical done in Holland and green light arrived, just waiting to sign."
Opening up in a 2018 interview over why things went wrong for him at United, he insisted that then-United boss Jose Mourinho does not deserve any criticism for his departure.
“I said to Mourinho ‘you will see me at the top’,” Depay told The Sunday Times. “He said, ‘OK, I hope that and I hope we will buy you back one day.’ I never had a bad relationship with him
“I saw everybody playing left wing except me, even Wayne Rooney. Rooney is, of course, a legendary player but not a winger.
“I don’t blame the manager. Maybe he doesn’t like my style of play. I love playing beautiful football, tricks and doing cheeky things. I don’t know if that’s his type of game.”
