AS Roma Announces Major Leadership Shake-Up Ahead of 2025 Transfer Window

AS Roma has confirmed a significant restructuring of its management team, with sporting director Florent Ghisolfi departing the club with immediate effect. The announcement, made by head coach Claudio Ranieri on June 17, marks a pivotal moment for the Serie A side as it prepares for the upcoming transfer window. Ghisolfi, who joined Roma in May 2024, leaves after a tenure marked by efforts to stabilize the squad, though the club has cited strategic realignment as the reason for his exit.
Ricky Massara, formerly of AC Milan, has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Ghisolfi. Massara’s successful stint at Milan, where he played a key role in the club’s 2021-2022 Serie A triumph, positions him as a strong contender to steer Roma’s recruitment strategy. Ranieri, a Roma native and legendary figure, will continue as head coach until his contract expires on June 30, 2025, before transitioning to a senior advisory role.
The timing of this change, aligned with the transfer window’s opening, reflects Roma’s intent to reshape its leadership amid competitive pressures in Serie A. A 2021 UEFA study suggests such mid-season shifts can lead to a 15% performance dip unless paired with a cohesive management team, a challenge Ranieri and Massara may now face.
