Tragic Loss: Liverpool Star Diogo Jota and Brother Killed in Car Crash

The football world is in mourning following the tragic deaths of Liverpool FC striker Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother André Silva in a devastating car accident in Spain. The incident occurred at 12:30 a.m. local time on Thursday, July 3, 2025, along the A-52 motorway near Zamora, as confirmed by the Spanish Civil Guard.
The brothers were traveling from Portugal to Santander when their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames, likely due to a burst tire during an overtaking maneuver. Emergency responders found the vehicle engulfed in fire, which spread to nearby vegetation, requiring firefighters to intervene. Preliminary investigations suggest no other vehicles were involved, and forensic analysis is underway to determine the exact cause.Jota, a key player for Liverpool since joining in 2020, recently celebrated a Premier League title in the 2024-25 season and a UEFA Nations League victory with Portugal in June 2025. His brother André played for lower-division club FC Penafiel.
The crash came shortly after Jota’s marriage to Rute Cardoso on June 22, leaving behind three young children.Liverpool FC expressed devastation in a statement, requesting privacy for the family and promising continued support. Manager Arne Slot described the loss as "unimaginable," while the Portuguese Football Federation hailed Jota as an "extraordinary person." UEFA has scheduled a minute’s silence for Euro 2025 matches, reflecting the global impact of this tragedy. A wake is planned for Friday in Gondomar, Portugal, with the funeral set for Saturday.
