Liverpool Mourns Diogo Jota and Brother After Tragic Car Crash

July 8, 2025 – The football world remains in shock following the sudden deaths of Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother André Silva, 25, in a high-speed car accident in Spain on July 3. Spanish authorities confirmed the crash occurred on the A-52 motorway in Zamora when Jota’s Lamborghini suffered a tyre burst while overtaking, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and catch fire. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot and captain Andy Robertson paid their respects outside Anfield on Tuesday, laying floral tributes at a growing memorial. Slot, who led Liverpool to the Premier League title in his debut 2024-25 season, described Jota as a "very special" player and person, emphasizing the club’s support for his grieving family, including his wife Rute Cardoso and three young children. Jota, who scored 65 goals in 182 appearances since joining from Wolves in 2020, was returning from Portugal for pre-season training when the tragedy struck.
The investigation continues, with speed identified as a key factor. A wake will be held in Gondomar, Portugal, on Friday, followed by a funeral on Saturday, as the football community unites to honor Jota’s legacy.
