Thomas Müller Joins Vancouver Whitecaps in Landmark MLS Move

German football icon Thomas Müller has officially signed a two-year contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps, marking a significant addition to Major League Soccer (MLS). The 35-year-old, renowned for his 13 Bundesliga titles and pivotal role in Germany’s 2014 World Cup triumph, will begin his new chapter with the Canadian club starting August 1, 2025. The deal, confirmed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, sees Vancouver secure Müller’s discovery rights from FC Cincinnati for $400,000, a record-breaking sum reflecting the growing value of such transactions in MLS.
Müller, who ended a 25-year association with Bayern Munich earlier this month, opted for Vancouver over other suitors, including LAFC, citing a desire for a fresh environment. The move underscores MLS’s rising appeal as a destination for global stars winding down their careers. Vancouver’s sporting director, Axel Schuster, hailed Müller’s arrival as a boost to the team’s profile, with the club currently second in the Western Conference. Müller is expected to debut against San José Earthquakes on August 10. This transfer, facilitated by MLS’s unique roster rules, highlights the league’s efforts to balance parity while attracting talent, setting the stage for an exciting new era at BC Place.
