Newcastle United Secure €40m Signing of AC Milan Defender Malick Thiaw

Newcastle United have finalized a significant transfer coup, signing German defender Malick Thiaw from AC Milan for a €40 million package, as confirmed on Monday, August 11, 2025. The 24-year-old completed his medical in Newcastle, paving the way for a contract until 2030, with an annual salary of €3.5 million. This move strengthens the Magpies' defensive line ahead of the new Premier League season, which kicks off this weekend.
Thiaw, who joined Milan from Schalke 04 in 2022 for €5 million, brings valuable experience with over 85 appearances for the Rossoneri, including a standout Champions League goal against Real Madrid in November 2024. His versatility as a centre-back or right-back, combined with his physical presence, is expected to enhance Newcastle’s backline pace and solidity under manager Eddie Howe.
The transfer comes after advanced negotiations, with Newcastle submitting an improved bid following an initial €30 million offer rejected by Milan. Despite manager Massimiliano Allegri’s initial desire to retain Thiaw, the player’s determination to join the Premier League facilitated the deal. This acquisition marks a key step for Newcastle, who have faced setbacks in their summer transfer pursuits, as they aim to build on last season’s success and compete in the Champions League.
