Newcastle United Secure €40m Signing of Malick Thiaw from AC Milan

Newcastle United have officially completed the €40m transfer of German defender Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, marking a significant move in the ongoing summer transfer window. The deal, finalized on August 12, 2025, includes a €36m fixed fee and €4m in potential add-ons, with Thiaw signing a four-year contract at St. James’ Park. The 24-year-old centre-back, who can also play as a right-back or defensive midfielder, joins Newcastle as part of their ambitious squad-building strategy following the club’s 2021 Saudi-backed takeover.
Thiaw, who moved to Milan from Schalke in 2022 for €5m plus bonuses, has already earned three caps for Germany, including a notable 2023 performance against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League. His arrival strengthens Newcastle’s defensive line, complementing recent signings like Anthony Elanga and loan goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. The transfer underscores Newcastle’s intent to compete at the highest level, despite missing out on other targets like Hugo Ekitike and Bryan Mbeumo during this window.
AC Milan, with Thiaw under contract until 2027, have agreed to the move, reflecting the shifting dynamics of European football transfers, where Premier League clubs continue to flex their financial muscle.
