FIFA Names Elite Roster of Match Officials for Landmark 2026 World Cup

FIFA has officially unveiled the comprehensive list of match officials selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a significant milestone in the preparations for the largest tournament in football history. To manage the expanded 48-team format across Canada, Mexico, and the United States, the FIFA Referees Committee has appointed a diverse team consisting of 52 referees, 88 assistant referees, and 30 video match officials.
This selection follows a rigorous three-year evaluation process focused on technical proficiency, physical fitness, and mental resilience. Representing all six confederations, these officials will oversee the record-breaking 104 matches scheduled for the tournament.
"Our aim is clear: to ensure the highest standard of officiating for the world's greatest stage," stated Pierluigi Collina, Chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee. "With more teams and more matches, the pressure is immense, but we have full confidence in this elite group."
The roster includes a historic number of female officials, continuing FIFA’s commitment to gender neutrality in the sport. The 30 video match officials will be stationed in a centralized hub, utilizing enhanced semi-automated offside technology to ensure precision in critical decision-making. The selected officials will now undergo a series of intensive preparation seminars and fitness assessments to ensure they are in peak condition for the opening kickoff in June.
