South Korea Face Defensive Crisis Ahead of World Cup Opener Against Czech Republic

According to Korean media outlet Naver Sports, injuries to Cho Yu-min and Kim Tae-hyun have left South Korea facing a defensive crisis ahead of their opening FIFA World Cup match against the Czech Republic. As a result, head coach Hong Myung-bo is expected to start Lee Ki-hyuk alongside Lee Han-beom, Kim Min-jae, and Jo Wi-je in defense.

Kim Tae-hyun, who plays for Japanese club Kashima Antlers, suffered an ankle injury during training. Not only will he miss South Korea's opening match against the Czech Republic, but his availability for the remainder of the group stage is also in doubt. He becomes the second key defender South Korea have lost during their World Cup preparations, following Cho Yu-min.

The Korean squad had already suffered a setback with Cho's injury, and the loss of another defender has further complicated matters. However, Hong has no plans to call up a replacement player. Instead, he intends to monitor Kim's recovery while relying on the current squad to navigate the group stage.

Reports from South Korean media suggest that the defensive unit will be built around Kim Min-jae. Alongside Lee Han-beom, Lee Ki-hyuk is now a strong candidate to enter the starting lineup. Speaking at a pre-match press conference on June 11, Hong revealed that the coaching staff had carefully considered their options and finalized the starting eleven.

Despite losing two defenders in quick succession, South Korea are not expected to abandon the three-man defensive system that has been developed over the past year and throughout their World Cup qualifying campaign. Rather than switching to a four-man back line, Hong is set to stick with the established three-center-back formation.
