Diallo Strikes Late as Ivory Coast Edge Ecuador 1-0 in World Cup Opener

A dramatic 90th-minute winner from substitute Amad Diallo propelled Ivory Coast to a thrilling 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their 2026 World Cup Group E opener at Lincoln Financial Field.
The tense encounter seemed destined for a goalless draw after both sides were repeatedly denied by the woodwork. Ecuador dominated the early physical battle, creating the clearer chances. Upper- woodwork strikes from John Yeboah and Alan Minda left the South Americans frustrated before the break, while Ivory Coast’s Elye Wahi also rattled the post in a frantic end-to-end contest.
Ecuador continued to press in the second half, with veteran striker Enner Valencia agonizingly hitting the frame of the goal. Ivory Coast’s defense rode their luck, surviving three early first-half yellow cards to Seko Fofana, Franck Kessié, and Guéla Doué.
The breakthrough finally came in the final minute of normal time. Defender Wilfried Singo delivered a precise low cross from the right flank, finding Diallo who calmly slotted the ball home to spark wild African celebrations.
The result puts Ivory Coast level with Germany at the top of Group E, while Ecuador faces an uphill battle heading into the second round of matches.
