----------------------------------
Manchester United and Manchester City played out a subdued 0-0 draw in Sunday's Premier League derby at Old Trafford, a result that hindered City's pursuit of Champions League qualification. The absence of City's injured top scorer Erling Haaland contributed to a lacklustre affair.

Pep Guardiola's side now sit fifth on 52 points, trailing Chelsea by one, while Manchester United remain in a disappointing 13th place with 38 points. Guardiola acknowledged the tight nature of the game but lamented his team's excessive movement with the ball.

The derby, the first goalless encounter between the rivals since 2020, offered few clear-cut chances, particularly in a drab first half played under sunny skies. The second half saw a slight increase in tempo, with City's Omar Marmoush forcing a fine save from Andre Onana, and United's Joshua Zirkzee drawing an excellent stop from Ederson.

United's clean sheet marked their first at home since December 1st. This contrast sharply with the thrilling reverse fixture in December, where United snatched a late 2-1 victory at the Etihad. However, Sunday's 196th Manchester derby lacked such excitement, with some fans departing before the final whistle.

While the second half offered glimpses of goalmouth action, including a crucial tackle from Noussair Mazraoui to deny Phil Foden and a penalty appeal for United that was dismissed, neither side could find the breakthrough. Post-match, United manager Ruben Amorim acknowledged the gap between the teams and the urgency to improve. City fans also paid tribute to departing midfielder Kevin De Bruyne in his final derby. The subdued atmosphere was further underlined by a post-match sit-in protest from several hundred United fans expressing their discontent with the club's ownership and recent ticket price hikes.
