Mats Hummels Announces His Retirement from Professional Football

Mats Hummels, the Roma defender and 2014 World Cup winner, has officially confirmed that he will retire from professional football at the end of the 2024-25 season. The 26-year-old expressed mixed emotions as he shared the news in a heartfelt video, revealing that after 18 years in the game, it was time to step away from the pitch.
Hummels, who joined Roma as a free agent in September following the end of his contract with Borussia Dortmund, had signed a one-year deal with an option for an additional 12 months. However, he made it clear that he would not be extending the contract.
Throughout his career, Hummels established himself as one of Germany's best defenders, winning five Bundesliga titles, including two with Borussia Dortmund and three with Bayern Munich. Starting his career in Bayern’s youth system, Hummels rose to prominence at Dortmund, where he helped the club win multiple league titles and reach a Champions League final. His time with the German national team was also illustrious, with Hummels playing a crucial role in Germany’s 2014 World Cup victory, including their historic 7-1 semifinal win over Brazil.
In 2016, Hummels made a high-profile move from Dortmund to Bayern, where he added more silverware to his collection, including three consecutive Bundesliga titles and a DFB Pokal. After returning to Dortmund in 2019, Hummels won another domestic cup and reached another Champions League final.
His final season in football was spent with Roma, where he faced a challenging start to his time in Italy. After joining the club, he struggled with match fitness and went through coaching changes, but under Claudio Ranieri’s leadership, Hummels regained his place as a central figure in the team’s defense.
