Barcelona Turn to Lautaro Martínez as Their New Priority Striker Target

Barcelona have reportedly made Lautaro Martínez their top target to strengthen the attack after their pursuit of Julián Álvarez from Atlético Madrid reached a dead end. With Atlético unwilling to consider negotiations for their Argentine forward, sporting director Deco has shifted his focus toward Inter Milan captain Lautaro, who is reportedly open to the possibility of moving to Camp Nou.
The change in direction comes after Barcelona explored different ways to make a deal for Álvarez possible. Atlético’s firm position eventually forced the Catalan club to abandon that option and consider alternatives. Lautaro has now emerged as the leading candidate, offering Barcelona an experienced forward who already has a proven record at the highest level of European football.
Any move for Lautaro would require complicated negotiations with Inter because the striker is under contract until 2029 and does not have a release clause. A potential transfer has been valued at around €85 million, which would still represent a major investment but could be more manageable than the financial demands associated with Álvarez. Barcelona will need to carefully structure the deal to avoid placing additional pressure on their finances.
From a tactical perspective, Lautaro could fit well into Hansi Flick’s attacking system. The Argentine is capable of operating inside the penalty area, attacking spaces behind defenders, pressing opponents, and dropping deeper to help build attacks. His movement and work rate could also create more opportunities for players such as Lamine Yamal, Anthony Gordon, and other attacking options within the Barcelona squad.
Viktor Gyökeres remains another possibility, although his situation depends heavily on Arsenal finding a replacement before considering his departure. For now, Lautaro appears to be the clearest priority after Álvarez was ruled out. Barcelona must next determine whether they can reach an agreement with Inter while keeping the financial package within acceptable limits.
